Bioware are looking to send fans off on a high note with their final piece of single player DLC, which will reunite you with all your team mates and have you running around the citadel to solve one last mystery. Mass Effect 3′s DLC hasn’t fared as well as its predecessor did, but Citadel more than makes up for any problems fans may have had and even reminds you of why you love the series in the first place.

After discovering a peculiar conspiracy directed squarely at Commander Shepard, the whole crew cancels their shore leave to get to the bottom of things. The tone is decidedly light this time around, while you may run down the occasional dark alleyway, there seems to be a heavy emphasis on good old-fashioned fun; no over bearing darkness, no hopeless quest, this is simply one last chance to have a light-hearted adventure with people you ‘ve grown attached to over the last 5 years, with every character seemingly trying to cram in a joke every few minutes along the way, even Javik the sour puss Prothean joins in the action, in fact I can’t think of a single line of his that isn’t comedic. While hardly laugh out loud funny, it is welcome especially given the tone of the rest of the game and provides a nice change of atmosphere.

The only major quibble I have with the story is when you find out who the big baddie is. Let’s just say… it’s silly. Like really silly. It’s hard to go into too much detail without venturing into spoiler territory but… it’s very silly and it’s played off strangely, not quite fitting in despite the fluffy tone of the whole adventure. You’ll want to see it through and there’s even a more personal moment near the end, but it gets a little goofy.

The main draw of this DLC however is the ability to meet your old crew one last time, although I seem to remember a press release saying that you could team up with characters from Mass Effect 2, though that only seems to be possible though the combat arena extra you can play on completion. Once the mission is over however, you get the option to throw a party for your old friends, though first you have to buy supplies and send out invitations; Reapers aren’t invited.

The game makes no bones about how silly everything is though thankfully and even plays up to it. Expect plenty of in-jokes and references to previous adventures, although it’s quite a shame that you can’t have a great deal of one on one time with people (except for a few people after the party), Mass Effect fans will enjoy hanging with these characters again.

Not much has changed gameplay wise; there are new enemies to fight but they work the same way as the Cerberus operatives do for the most part. The biggest new change comes early when who are only given a pistol with a silencer to work with and get the chance to do a little optional sneaking. There is a decent variety of gameplay on offer here, including a party scene similar to the Kasumi Goto sequence in Mass Effect 2. If you take the time to take in the environments, including Shepard’s new apartment complete with hidden audio interviews with Captain Anderson, then this should take you approximately 4 hours to complete. Even after the adventure there’s plenty to do from the surprisingly decent combat arena to the casinos.

There are some great sights on offer here, every environment feels fresh and new, with some battles near the end… I’ll stop myself there for fear of spoilers. Suffice to say the presentation is top-notch, capped off with a great soundtrack and every major voice actor returning for one last hurrah.

While not giving characters from Mass Effect 2 more of the limelight feels like a poor omission, it’s hard to fault what’s on offer here. Personally, I was ready to swear off Mass Effect after the poor Omega DLC which asked a higher price point for a poor experience, though Citadel more than makes up for it. While it may be as impactful as Lair of the Shadow Broker or even affect the series like Leviathon did, Citadel is just fun, pure and simple. If you want to remember why you loved this game in the first place, drop the 1200 MS points for one last journey, you wont regret it.

    Turns out there is a touch more one on one time with characters than I originally thought, finding out how was annoying; there's a little option on your computer. Still, nice little moments, though some of which the main game pretty much covered.
