Rockstar Games are undoubtably the kings of open world gaming, taking gangsters, mob bosses, gang bangers and cowboys to new heights of stardom. One territory they’ve yet to dabble in however is space, their final frontier which it seems could one day be on the cards. Dan Houser, vice president of Rockstar, has said that a sci-fi open world game is extremely tempting but wouldn’t happen for some time, at least until they have a good reason to get it off the ground.

Speaking to Ecrans, a French website which was kindly translated by OXM, the lead writer of Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne 3 seemed to think that Rockstar would jump at the chance of a sci-fi title the moment it had a practical idea.

Reflecting on the huge success Rockstar had with Red Dead Redemption, Houser spoke about their successes, explaining that they felt comfortable going into a Western setting as they had something to say.

“When we decided to make a Western, it was because we knew we had something to say. One of our strengths is the consistency of the game world, We’re not necessarily the best writers in the world, but we know how to write a video game. We have no interest in going into science fiction for the sake of flying cars and laser guns. The best science fiction stories are those that speak about the human condition. So while this idea is very tempting and, by definition, anything’s possible in a videogame, we lack the essential thing for the moment: a good reason.”

I doubt we’ll be seeing a Star Wars vs GTA title anytime soon but the idea alone is definitely interesting, but what do you think?

Would you give your right arm to see a sic-fi open world title moulded by the hands of Rockstar or would you rather they focus on GTA V and beyond? let us know in the comments below!
