EA may now have the rights to create future Star Wars games, but it seems that Avalanche Studios (creators behind Just Cause) were previously on the brink of making a massive open world game for LucasArts.

Past and present Avalanche Studios executives say the developer was close to signing the deal which could have even saved LucasArts.

Development Director Oskar Burman revealed the close-call over Twitter.

“Actually, wanting to work with [Star Wars] goes deep in [Sweden], Long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, we almost got that deal when I was at Avalanche.”

Burman worked at Avalanche Studios from 2005 through 2009, so we can take it that he’s a pretty reliable source. Avalanche Studios founder and chief creative officer Cristofer Sundberg responded to this tweet, explaining that he believes if the deal had been made, LucasArts would still be open.

“If they had given us the deal back then, LucasArts would be alive today, A massive [Star Wars] open-world game! We would have rocked it.”

Onwards and upwards though, as Avalanche Studios are currently hard at work on an, as yet, unannounced title. It’s certainly an interesting thought of what might have been, Just Cause mixed with Star Wars? Who wouldn’t want that!
