Earlier this week Bethesda unveiled news of Wolfenstein: The New Order, a brand new reimagined entry into the Wolfenstein series. Set in an alternate 1960s, in which the Nazis emerged victorious during World War II, Wolfenstein: The New Order will see the return of BJ Blazkowicz, following his imprisonment in an asylum having turned the minigun-wielding robo-Hitler into a steaming mess.

The story will obviously still revolve around Blazkowicz taking on the Nazis singlehandedly, although thanks to a huge scientific and technological leap, they have been able to create devastating machines such as drones and robotic troopers. In this alternate timeline, the Nazis won the space race, being the first to land on the moon in Wolfenstein: The New Order’s alternate reality.

The New Order will still remain an action-driven shooter, but this time MachineGames are keen to throw in some puzzles to solve along with some globe-trotting to areas such as the catacombs of Berlin and vast mountains in Poland. Most interestingly however, it’s been revealed that the game will not feature multiplayer. At all.

Yes, that’s right, according to MachineGames creative director Jens Matthies, who spoke to Gamespot, the decision to skip multiplayer was part of the studio’s efforts not to taint the legacy of the Wolfenstein series.

“It’s such a huge part of video game legacy, If there’s a video game museum, Wolfenstein is in the first room. It’s the start of the wave that shaped the world of gaming.”

Personally, I think this is a great move, opting to spend more time focusing on a great single player experience is always better than spreading production and development teams thin, in order to make a sub-par multiplayer component. Just look at recent forays into awful multiplayer such as Tomb Raider.
